El domingo teníamos que regresar a España. El punto de encuentro fue la estación de Apeldoorn. Allí se reunieron las familias y nos dieron una fantástica despedida acompañándonos hasta el mismo andén.

He had to go back to Spain on Sunday. The meeting point was Apeldoorn Station, where all the families waved bye bye on the platfom.

Mover un grupo de 20 dicharacheros estudiantes con sus respectivas maletas por los trenes de Holanda hasta llegar a Schiphol a tiempo es una pequeña aventura digna de un episodio de Pekin Express.

To make a group of 20 chatterbox students keep going with their luggage on the Dutch trains to Schiphol is kind of a little adventure for an episode of Pekin Express.

Pero todo llega y regresamos a Madrid a la hora prevista. 

Ahora a esperar a la visita del grupo holandés en abril.

But everything ends and we eventually landed in Madrid in time. 

Now it's time to wait for the Dutch group visiting Rivas in April.

Día 4 / Day 4: Amsterdam

Nuestros anfitriones holandeses habían organizado una excursión a Amsterdam para nuestro último día de actividades. Habían preparado una visita guiada al Rijksmuseum y después algo de tiempo libre por la zona de Museumplein.
Our Dutch hosts had planned a trip to Amsterdam for our last day of activities. They had arranged a guided visit to Rijksmuseum and then free time around the Museumplein.

Pero cuando nos disponíamos a entrar, el personal nos ha comunicado que el museo se estaba evacuando debido a un corte de electricidad. Al principio pensamos que afectaba solamente al museo, después nos dijeron que afectaba a la zona de Museumplein, pero finalmente averiguamos que había ocurrido en la mayor parte del centro de la ciudad.
But when we were about to enter the museum the staff told us that the museum was being evacuated due to power cut. First we thought it was just in the museum, then we were told that it involved the Museumplein area, but finally we found out that it had affected the most areas in the city centre.

Así que cuando se confirmó la cancelación de la visita al museo, pasamos a tener tiempo libre para recorrer Amsterdam a pie desde Museumplein hasta la Estación central.
So once we knew that the visit to the Museum had been cancelled, we enjoyed some free time to walk around Amsterdam from Museumplein to Central Station.

Después regresamos a Apeldoorn para disfrutar del resto del tiempo con las familias anfitrionas.
Finally we went back to Apeldoorn to spend the rest of our stay with othe host families.

Día 3 / Day 3: Deventer

Hoy hemos empezado el día con una puesta en común de las actividades realizadas hasta ahora: el grupo español ha intercambiado la información recogida durante la caza del tesoro en Utrecht y ha revisado las fotos matemáticas. Después se ha unido el grupo holandés para hacer un intercambio de impresiones de la visita inicial al centro y a las clases.
Today we started with a discussion on the activities done so far: the group of Spanish students shared the information they had gathered for the scavenger hunt in Utrecht and they also checked their mathematical pictures. Then the group of Dutch students joined to exchange their impressions about their tour around the school and the lessons they watched.

A continuación hicimos un viaje en autobús hasta Deventer, donde estaba previsto preparar la actividad propuesta por el departamento de Fisica y Química: observar esclusas y diques de contención, además de aprender para qué sirven y cómo funcionan. Observamos un molino, un puente construido sobre el que se destruyó en la Segunda Guerra Mundial y cruzamos el río en un pequeño ferry.


La visita además incluyó una torre que ofreció una perspectiva de la estructura y unas vistas únicas de la cuidad. Posteriormente nos desplazamos en bus para ver una esclusa. Tuvimos mucha suerte y pudimos comprobar en directo el funcionamiento de esta estructura. Tuvimos además ocasión de visitar el centro de control de las esclusa. ¡Una visita de lo más completa!

Next we travelled to Deventer by bus to gather information for the assignment given by the Physics and Chemistry department, that is watching locks, winter locks and researching their use and working procedure. 

We watched a windmill, a bridge built after the original being destroyed in WWII and we crossed the river on a tiny ferry. The trip also included climbing a tower with an amazing view of the structure and the whole city. Later we got back to the bus to visit a lock. 

Toma tomate tómalo... ¡ia ia ooooo!

We were really lucky because we could watch the structure working as well as the operational hub. A whole experience indeed!

Llegaba el momento de la diversión y nos fuimos a la pista de hielo a patinar, unos con más destreza que otros. Lo mejor: OK, esto es, no hubo bajas, así que al bus y de vuelta a Aperdoorn y a las casas de las familias anfitrionas.




It was time to have fun so we went to an ice rink for some iceskating, some more skillfully than others. It was OK, that means no damaged students, so back to Apeldoorn by bus to meet the host families.

Día 2 / Day 2: Utrecht

Comenzamos las actividades fuera del centro con una visita a Utrecht para recorrer el centro de esta bonita ciudad medieval y subir la Torre Dom, la más alta de Holanda con 112.5 m. En esta ocasión no nos acompañaba el grupo holandés.

We started the activities outside Veluws College visiting Utrecht to have a tour around the centre of this lovely medieval city ans also to climb Dom Tower, the highest tower in The Netherlands, 112.5 m. This time the Dutch group didn't come with us.

Hicimos el viaje en tren.

We travelled by train.

La estación de Utrecht conecta con un enorme centro comercial que a su vez es la entrada al corazón de la ciudad, lo cual ya es en sí mismo muy sorprendente. En el tiempo que teníamos hasta la visita a la Torre Dom nos distribuimos en grupos para conseguir averiguar la respuesta a las preguntas de la Caza del Tesoro. Unos grupos tuvieron más éxito que otros, consiguiendo no sólo la información sino también muchas fotos con las personas que colaboraron en la actividad.

Utrech station connects with a big shopping centre which leads to the city centre, really surprising indeed. We split into small groups to find out the answers of the scavenger hunt. Some groups were more successful than others, not just gathering plenty of information but also loads of picts with the passers-by who colaborated with the activity.

Al mismo tiempo, Utrecht fue el escenario perfecto para realizar fotografías matemáticas, que es la actividad propuesta por el departamento de Matemáticas para este intercambio.

Besides, Utrecht was the perfect location for taking mathematical pictures, which is the assignment given by the department of Maths for this exchange.

Por último, conseguimos subir los interminables 465 escalones, admirar las campanas y descubrir por qué la torre está aislada en el Domplein en lugar de estar junto a su correspondiente catedral. El motivo fue...¡un tornado en 1674!
Finally, we managed to climb the neverending 465 steps, then admire the bells and find out why the tower is isolated in the Domplein instead of standing next to the corresponding cathdral. The reason was ...¡a tornado in 1674!


La recompensa tras el esfuerzo realizado fue admirar las vistas de la ciudad desde la torre.
After such a huge effort it was really rewarding to enjoy the views from the tower.

Día 1 Llegada / Day 1: Arrival

Ha sido un día largo y agotador, pero todo ha ido bien y sin incidencias.
It's been a long and tiring day, but everything was fine and without a hitch.

El avión dejó Madrid lloviendo y llegó a Amsterdam con un tímido sol asomando entre las nubes. La temperatura es agradable por el momento. Hemos tenido suerte, porque la pasada semana la ola de frío llegaba aquí a los -15ºC.
The plane took off while it was rainy in Madrid and landed in Amsterdam with beams of sunlight entering through the clouds. Nice temperature by now. We are lucky because the cold wave last week made temperature fall below -15ºC.

El viaje en tren desde el aeropuerto de Schiphol hasta Apeldoorn se ha visto amenizado para parte del grupo por una divertida charla multilingüe (inglés, español y unas nociones básicas de neerlandés) con un grupo de músicos llamado Beethoven Legends. Su locuaz cantante y percusionista, Edwin, además de contarnos que es originario de Curaçao nos ha enseñado a pronunciar algunas palabras en neerlandés.
Our trip on the train from Schiphol to Apeldoorn was enlivened by an amusing multilingual chat -mixing English, Spanish and some basic Dutch- with a band of Dutch musicians called Beethoven Legends. Talkative singer and drummer Edwin told us that he is from Curaçao and also taught us some basic Dutch phrases.

Tras un tentempié y una visita guiada por estudiantes, un rato de charla e intercambio de impresiones en inglés, y por último a pasar el resto del día con las familias anfitrionas.



After having some snacks and touring the school with our Dutch partners, students had some chat before meeting their host families.
